Omega-3 fatty acids are key
The brain and nerves consist primarily of fat, and EPA and DHA are absolutely essential for human health. The concentration of omega-3 fatty acids in the brain makes them key players in neurological disorders such as autism and ADHD. Research shows that deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids contribute to an increase in autism and ADHD. Moreover, children who score low on behavioral assessment tests also consistently have lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Scientists also agree that the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fats is just as important as the levels, particularly in autism and ADHD. Vitamins and autism
Low vitamin D levels have been associated with autism. There have been cases in which treatment with high doses of vitamin D reversed some autistic behaviors. One study confirmed that low folate status during pregnancy is associated with hyperactivity in children. A vitamin B1 deficiency is associated with delayed language development in childhood. Supplementation with thiamine (vitamin B1) has demonstrated clinical benefits in some autistic children. The brain is vulnerable to biotin deficiency (vitamin B7), and a biotin deficiency can therefore cause neurological problems associated with autism.
Magnesium and vitamin B6: a winning team!
When a group of autistic children received magnesium and vitamin B6 supplementation in a study, 70% of the children showed improvements in social interaction and communication. In another study, physical aggression and inattention improved after supplementation with magnesium and vitamin B6 for several months.
ADHD and autism: an oxidative stress disorder?
Oxidative stress is a term used to describe damage to healthy tissues and cells in our bodies caused by an excess of free radicals or a deficiency of antioxidants. Interestingly, several studies show an increase in oxidative stress in both autism and ADHD, resulting in a reduced ability to eliminate toxins. Minerals such as selenium and copper, antioxidants such as cysteine, vitamin E, and various other nutrients ensure that the body's powerful defense systems function optimally.
Many nutrients are needed for the complex brain and nervous system to function properly. In conditions such as autism and ADHD, it is therefore advisable to assess overall nutritional status. Symptoms can improve drastically by correcting just a few deficiencies.
